In the Petén department of Guatemala lies the most artifacts and ruins from the Maya. It holds the famous temples of Tikal, as well as many other ancient Mayan cities. The Petén also contains dense forest, the last intact section of rainforest in Central America. But it is being destroyed by fires caused by farmers and other people that have passed through it, as well as illegal logging. Slowly, deforestation is taking it, and damage could be caused to the pieces of Mayan history inside it. Organizations such as the Rainforest Alliance have taken control over enforcing the laws that protect the Petén, and its situation has improved.
