PACAYA (VOLCÁN PACAYA)
Pacaya is an active volcano close to the city of Antigua, with an elevation of 8,373 feet. It has erupted at least twenty-three times since the Spanish conquest of Guatemala. For a century, it was inactive, but in 1965 it started up again. Its most recent eruption was in May of 2010. This eruption caused tremors and ash to rain down on the nearby areas, including Guatemala City. The closest communities called for an evacuation. A reporter covering the eruption, Anibal Archila, was killed by the flying debris. Many more eruptions like these have happened, causing more chaos and destruction.
